This past week the SCB MBON teamed up with Northwest Fisheries Science Center and Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) to survey fish and invertebrate communities on 12 mile reef, also known as Calafia, using an imaging AUV. The cruise aboard the Shearwater took place September 7-11.

The survey team including SCB MBON’s own, Bob Miller, plans to use these images to develop methods for automated identification of marine organisms using Deep Learning techniques.
